Music for Bodies is a research project linking the sonic mapping of human bodies to architecture, through a practical study of bioresonance and interface building. Its aim is to discover new methods of experimental music making, as well as make new music more accessible to the wider community. It is doing this concentrating on making music to feel rather than just listen to. The Sonic Bed_London recently won an Award of Distinction for Digital Music at Prix Ars Electronica.

Theatre_of_immanence_20_aba_2144ak1 THE THING – BEN VAN BERKEL WITH LOUIS ETCHEGORRY AND JOHAN BETTUM

BEN VAN BERKEL
AND THE THEATRE OF IMMANENCE
PORTIKUS, FRANKFURT/M., GERMANY
25 NOVEMBER 2007 – 13 JANUARY 2008

»Ben van Berkel & the Theatre of Immanence« is a combined art and architectural exhibition wherein the different parts in the exhibition are synthesised into a complete whole. The exhibition stages a theatre or space of communication: communication between the visitors and the exhibited works, between the virtual and the real. Throughout its period, the architectural installation will serve as a hub for various events including lectures, art performances, hosted talks with invited guests, and DJ-sessions.
The architectural installation, entitled »The Thing«, is designed by Städelschule professor for architecture Ben van Berkel together with professor Johan Bettum and Luis Etchegorry. The Frankfurt-based design-groups MESO Web Scapes and MESO Digital Interiors have developed a projection work that elaborates on the installation by dynamically embellishing it with moving images and thereby activating its surfaces. The projection work, »On Things Of(f) Things On« (see also picture story focus: media), is a case study in augmented architecture. It is an attempt to create a reactive surface of extraordinary spatial complexity.
The installation, »The Thing«, consists of an upper and a lower level. The upper level serves as a form of theatre and the lower level as a more traditional exhibition space. The two levels are separated by a volumetric surface which is perforated by open holes. These holes serve to connect the two areas visually and audibly. On the lower level, the exhibition presents a group of works by artists and architects who have participated in the one-year long experimental project, entitled »the Space of Communication«, a project by the Städelschule Architecture Class (SAC).

The famous three stripes became the protagonists for a 1. 400 sqm grand stage.
With pivoting points behind a 60m long horizon, the 24×8m platforms rotated across the stage.
Their exact positions allowed various constellations, that defined the dramaturgical sections during the show.
The curved ramps emphasized the movement of the platforms and symbolized the new Y3-Logo.
The heritage logo was generated by rotating the two outer platforms to the sides.

Zaz_08_expo_acciona_029_zaz_3294 »EARTH, WATER, AIR«

Acciona pavilion – ZaragozaExpo 2008 by GPD S.A. The design of the pavilion based on the concept of the spiral as a symbol of transformation. The exhibition area is divided into three areas: Earth, Water and Air.
The earth area is dominated by a sculpture representing a large fissure out of which a record of a huge number of everyday items emerges. This hall gives visitors a feeling of oppression, conveying a need for change.
The water area is an interactive and constantly changing space, designed to trigger sensations. The objective of this hall is to make visitors aware of the need to work together to achieve significant changes in our environment. (see also: media)
Finally, the air area features a landscape of hanging spheres designed to give visitors a feeling of calm. Nineteen of the fifty-three spheres installed in this room double as supports for the various museum exhibits, which inform visitors about Acciona’s actions focused on sustainable development.

Fra_08_004_biennale_as_it_vca »SOUNDS OF SILENCE« FOR VAN CLEEF & ARPELS

at the Biennale des Antiquaires 2008
11—21 September, Grand Palais, Paris

After the series of installations in October 2005 to December 2006 the “Sounds of Silence duo” Petra Eichler and Susanne Kessler was asked to design the “Van Cleef & Arpels” stand at the “Biennale des Antiquaires” in the Grand Palais, Paris, 2008. They conjured up a lyrical, fairytale world.
They created four paper cut-out gardens as installations showcasing the latest Van Cleef & Arpels designs, embedding the prestigious jewellery range in a delicately detailed narrative context.
Each of the gardens mirrors the features of a specific type of landscape design: the stringent symmetry of the French garden, the consummate clarity of the Asian garden, the romanticism of the rambling English garden and the whimsical opulence of the Italian Renaissance garden. The jewellery display cases form an integral part of each paper cut-out scene.
